Investing in the UK

Our total permanent workforce of around 75,000 employees makes us one of the top 10 private sector employers in the UK. Our employees are spread across the UK in a variety of corporate and technology functions in Amazon and Amazon Web Services (AWS), including software development, product management, and engineering, as well as jobs in the operations teams in our fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations. We recently made a further £3.5m commitment to our apprenticeship fund to create career opportunities for people across England, bringing the total funding investment to £8m since launching in 2021. Since 2010, we’ve made direct investments in our UK operations of more than £56bn. These direct investments raise the economic activity in a given region, and creates a ripple effect through the economy as the firms that supply goods and services to Amazon expand and associated household spending increases. In 2022, we invested more than £1.6bn in infrastructure as we continued to fit out our fulfilment centres with the latest robotics technology, and we opened our first development centre in Swansea in Wales, the new home to Veeqo which provides software for sellers on Amazon.

Employment and skills support

Amazon employees have great opportunities to progress their careers, whether through improving existing skills or promotion into a managerial role. Amazon’s fully-funded apprenticeship programme, from entry-level through to degree-level, provides an exciting path for future team leaders, engineers, and innovation drivers. And for those who see their future outside Amazon, the Career Choice programme offers funding for adult education, pre-paying 95% of tuition and associated fees - up to £8,000 over four years - for nationally recognised courses. Subjects range from accountancy to HGV driving and software developing, and are designed to help employees pursue careers beyond Amazon if they wish to do so.

Empowering small businesses

More than half of all physical product sales on the Amazon store in the UK are from independent selling partners, most of who are small and medium-sized businesses. More than 100,000 UK SMEs now sell on Amazon, many of which are located outside of London. SMEs based in Manchester, Belfast and Glasgow selling on Amazon recorded some of the highest average annual revenues, surpassing the average annual revenue of London-based sellers. Amazon also provides small business owners, start-ups and entrepreneurs with tools and opportunities to succeed, like the Amazon Small Business Accelerator. Hundreds of thousands of businesses have accessed the Accelerator since it was launched in 2020 as a direct response to the impact of the pandemic on the startup and SME community.

Amazon in the community

We look to leverage our scale for good and our ability to innovate to strengthen communities where our employees live and work. Our teams work side-by-side with community partners to build long-lasting solutions to some of society’s biggest challenges. Last year, Amazon contributed over £100 million in support for charities and healthcare organisations. We donated over 10 million products to UK charities, and supported tens of thousands of families in deprived areas of the UK through our ‘multibank’ initiative. In 2023, Amazon became the official home of the Red Nose and together with our customers and partners, we raised over £2.7million for Comic Relief. We support students and teachers with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and AWS, and through our disaster relief and response efforts we provide humanitarian support to organisations fighting large-scale natural disasters.
